The Advance Peace Approach

Evidence has shown that entire communities are not violent, but there are a very small number of individuals who drive disproportionate amounts of gun violence. Those closest to the gun violence crisis are likely to be both perpetrators and victims of gun violence. By seeking out the most influential and lethal individuals in the community and addressing the root causes of the violent behaviors, gun violence can be greatly reduced.  These individuals are often not reached by any other community service or program.

Community Outreach and Engagement

We seek out the most lethal and influential individuals at the center of gun violence in Yolo County. Our street outreach team opens communication and builds a relationship with potential participants. When the target individuals are ready, they voluntarily become participants, called fellows, in the Peacemaker Fellowship®.  This transformative program provides personalized, high-touch support to any individuals influenced, survived or involved in lethal firearm offenses. By enrolling in an eighteen-month program, participants are provided with an opportunity to transform their lives.

For us to engage potential participants, our staff builds trust in the community and forms relationships with community members. Staff is specifically selected for their ties to the community and understanding of the lifestyle of our fellows. By hiring people with deep ties and understanding of the community, our street outreach workers, called Neighborhood Change Advocates (NCAs) can effectively meet the fellows where they are in their life journey and help guide them to making healthier life choices.
